Brand
Leo Fender ran a radio repair shop in Fullerton, California before he built lap steels and amps, and in 1950 his company shipped the Esquire and Broadcaster, the first solidbody electrics made in real numbers. The Precision Bass followed in 1951, the Stratocaster in 1954, then the Jazzmaster in 1958, the Jaguar in 1962 and the Mustang in 1964. CBS bought the company in January 1965, and collectors split Fenders into pre-CBS and CBS guitars because of what changed after that, including bigger headstocks, bound necks with block inlays, polyester finishes and, from 1971, the three-bolt neck. A group of investors led by Bill Schultz bought Fender from CBS in 1985. By then Fender Japan, founded in 1982, was building well-regarded reissues, and factories in Corona, California and Ensenada, Mexico followed. That's why so many vintage-style Fenders for sale are reissues. In a listing, find the country of origin on the decal or neck plate first, then match the neck date, pot codes and serial to the year claimed.
