Fender launched the Mustang in August 1964 as the top of its student line, a short-scale, offset-waist guitar with a new floating Dynamic Vibrato and an unusual way of switching its two pickups. Each pickup has its own slider for on, off and reversed phase, so you get out-of-phase sounds a Strat can't make. Most were built with a 24-inch scale and a few with the 22.5-inch one. In 1969 Fender added body contours and the Competition finishes with racing stripes. The Mustang ran until 1982, and in the 1990s cheap used ones landed with grunge and indie players. Kurt Cobain played a Competition Mustang in the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video, David Byrne used one in early Talking Heads, and Graham Coxon played them in Blur. As old student guitars, plenty were hot-rodded or refinished along the way. Pick a B-width neck if you can, and check that the pickups and switches are stock before paying extra for a Competition stripe.

How to date one
The serial is on the neck plate until 1977, when it moved to the headstock decal, and the neck heel stamp ends with a width letter. Features help too, with slab bodies to 1968, contours and Competition finishes from 1969, a second string tree from 1974 and black pickguards from 1976.
What to check before you buy
Aftermarket pickups, rewired switching and amateur refinishes are common on these old student guitars. The vibrato tailpiece and floating bridge also get swapped or modified, so check that they're original.
01Neck width: Ask for a photo of the stamp on the neck heel. A B after the date means the fuller 1 5/8-inch nut, and an A means the narrow neck.
02Switches: Ask for a short clip running both sliders through every position. You should hear each pickup alone, both together and the thin out-of-phase sound.
03Competition finish: Check a striped finish in the photos against the year claimed. Competition Mustangs date from 1969 to about 1973, with stripes across the body by the forearm contour.
04Scale: Ask the seller for the scale length or count the frets in the photos. Most have 22 frets on a 24-inch scale, and a 22.5-inch Mustang is a rare early one.
05Pickups: Ask for a photo with the pickguard lifted. Original pickups have fully covered tops with no pole pieces showing, and fresh solder means a change.
06Serial: Find the serial in the photos. It sits on the neck plate up to 1977 and on the headstock decal after.

We'd buy the 1974 Competition Mustang in Candy Apple Red titled 100% original from a US dealer at $3,670 delivered, inside the $3,000–5,075 delivered band where most of the about 131 listed sit, or a 1977–78 Mustang from $1,961 delivered if you just want to play one. Originality shows in the asks, with 1972 Competition Reds from one Japanese shop at $3,510 titled mod and $4,325 without, and 1964–66 guitars at $2,940–7,492, while the one 1964 titled all original, at $13,106, comes from a zero-feedback seller. Ask for the neck heel stamp (a B width is the fuller neck), a photo with the guard lifted to check the pickups are stock, and a clip of both sliders in every position, and check a racing stripe against the 1969 to about 1973 Competition years before you pay extra for one. Skip the zero-feedback sellers, and treat any title with mod in it as a modified guitar.
