Fender · Stratocaster · 1954–1965
Leo Fender's team designed the Stratocaster in 1953 and 1954, with Freddie Tavares drawing the body and guitarist Rex Gallion pushing for the contours, and full production started in October 1954. Three pickups, a vibrato that moves with the strings and six adjustable saddles were meant to make the Telecaster obsolete, though it took Buddy Holly on The Ed Sullivan Show in December 1957 for most people to see one. Collectors read the changes year by year. Ash gave way to alder in mid-1956, the neck went from round to a V and back, a rosewood slab board arrived in 1959 and became a thin veneer in 1962, and L serials ran from 1963. CBS bought Fender in January 1965, and the small-headstock L-serial guitars built that year are usually still counted as pre-CBS. Every part of a Strat unscrews, so most survivors have had something swapped. Buy the one whose neck date, body date, pot codes and finish all agree, and knock something off for every replaced part.
The serial is on the neck plate (the very first 1954 guitars have it on the back plate), and an L prefix marks 1963–1965, but Fender grabbed plates from a bin, so treat it as a rough year. The pencil date on the neck heel (an ink stamp from 1962), the body date in a cavity and the pot codes (137 for CTS or 304 for Stackpole, then year and week) should all fall within a few months of each other.
Refinishes, swapped necks and replaced pickups, tuners, string trees, switches and saddles are all common, and collectors pay most for an all-original guitar. The single-ply guards often crack at the neck pickup screw, and reproduction decals and reissue parts turn up on doctored guitars.
Buying guide
We'd buy the original 1957 sunburst with its original tweed case from a US dealer at $37,185 delivered, in the middle of the $23,200–46,925 delivered band where most of the about 38 listed sit. Strats titled original or all original ask $37,185–47,749 delivered for 1957–58 sunbursts, against $17,106–27,809 for ones titled refinished or not fully original, and 1954–55 and left-handed originals run $89,750–247,433. Every part of a Strat unscrews, so ask for the neck heel date, the pot backs (codes starting 137 or 304), the neck plate serial and photos under the pickguard, and knock something off for every replaced part. Skip zero-feedback sellers, like the one asking $160,000 for a 1959 Dakota Red titled 100% original, and the two 1960s listed by different sellers under the same title, and on any of these insist on insured, signed-for delivery and check the returns policy.
$15,725.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered pre-CBS Strat here, a 1960 in Fiesta Red from a US seller. It isn't titled original finish, and a 1960 titled refinished red asks about $22,000, so ask for photos under the guard and in the cavities before you trust the color.
1960 Fender Stratocaster Fiesta Red
$37,185.00est. delivered
Titled original with its original tweed case, from a 100% US dealer, and the lowest ask for a 1950s Strat titled original. Ask for the neck heel date, the pot codes and photos under the guard, and check they fall within a few months of each other.
original 1957 Fender Stratocaster Sunburst w/orig. tweed case
$18,000.00delivered
Titled an old refin and a functional stage player, so you're paying player-grade money for a 1959 or 1960 Strat, with free shipping. Ask for the neck heel date and a photo of the frets, since a player's guitar has usually had parts changed.
1959/60 Fender Stratocaster - Olympic White Old Refin - Functional Stage Player
$21,999.99delivered
Titled refretted, so the frets shouldn't need work soon, and it comes with its original hard case. The title also says refinished, which is why it asks about $20,000 under the same dealer's sunburst 1960 that isn't titled refinished.
Fender Pre CBS Slab Board Stratocaster Fiesta Red 1960 w/OHSC (Refin/Refret)
$89,750.00est. delivered
A 1954, Fender's first year, titled 100% original with its original tweed case, at $89,750 delivered while the other 1954 here asks $247,433. Ask whether the serial is on the back plate, as on the very first guitars, and for photos of the neck heel and pot dates.
