Fender · Jazzmaster · 1958–1980 (original run)
Fender introduced the Jazzmaster in 1958 as its new top model, aimed at seated jazz players, with an offset body, wide flat pickups, a separate rhythm circuit and the first rosewood fretboard on a Fender. Jazz players mostly passed. Surf bands took it up after the Ventures hit with 'Walk, Don't Run' in 1960. CBS added a bound neck in 1965 and block inlays in 1966, and by the 1970s the model was being pieced together from leftover parts until Fender dropped it in 1980. That's when cheap used ones found new owners. Elvis Costello holds one on the cover of My Aim Is True, Tom Verlaine, Sonic Youth and J Mascis built their sound on them, and Kevin Shields used the long vibrato arm for his glide guitar on Loveless. Pre-CBS guitars draw the collectors, and the late-1960s bound, block-inlay ones are good players with the look many people want. Most stage Jazzmasters have had the bridge changed, so ask whether the original bridge comes with the guitar.
Serials follow other Fenders, with an L prefix for 1963–1965 and F plates from late 1965, and the neck heel carries a pencil date until 1962 and an ink stamp after. The features narrow it down. Look for the gold anodized guard on the first ones, clay dots into 1964, a bound neck in 1965, blocks from 1966 and polyester finishes from about 1968.
Hit hard with light strings, the original bridge lets strings jump out of the saddle grooves, so many have been fitted with Mustang, Tune-o-matic or aftermarket bridges. Refinishes and pickup or wiring changes are common too.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1965 in Daphne Blue with its original hard case from a US seller at $8,149 delivered, about $2,700 under the $10,875–16,675 delivered band where most of the about 27 listed sit. Pre-CBS 1958–63 guitars ask $11,999–27,828 delivered, with the one titled original Olympic White at the top, while the 1965 titled body refinish asks $8,635 and 1965–69 sunbursts ask $8,000–9,459. Most stage Jazzmasters have had the bridge changed, so ask whether the original bridge comes with it, check the inlays against the year (dots on an unbound neck to 1964, binding in 1965, blocks from 1966), and ask for photos under the guard, the neck heel date and a clip of both circuits. A custom color asking as little as the 1964 and 1965 here needs photos under the guard to show the paint is factory, and on the 1958 titled with a 1965 finish, ask what's original.
$8,145.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered Jazzmaster with stated shipping, a pre-CBS 1964 in Olympic White with its original hard case, from a US seller. It isn't titled original finish, and a custom color at this price needs photos under the guard to show the paint is factory.

$8,149.00est. delivered
A 1965 in Daphne Blue with its original hard case from a 100% US seller, open to offers and about $2,700 under the band. Check the neck is bound with dots, as a 1965 should be, and ask for photos under the guard to confirm the color.
Vintage 1965 Fender Jazzmaster Daphne Blue With Original Hardshell Case
$8,635.47est. delivered
Titled body refinish, so you pay player money for a 1965, about $500 more than the cheapest one here. Ask whether the bridge and pickups are original, since the refinish has already taken it out of collector territory.
