The Jaguar arrived in 1962 as Fender's new top model, the last of its four classic guitars. It took the Jazzmaster's offset idea and added a shorter 24-inch scale to tempt Gibson players, 22 frets, narrow pickups in notched metal claws to cut hum, a strangle switch, a rhythm circuit and a spring-loaded string mute, all on plenty of chrome. Fender's ads put it on the beach, but it never sold like a Strat or Tele, and CBS dropped it in 1975. Cheap used ones then found punk, shoegaze and indie players, and Kurt Cobain's heavily modified left-handed 1965 is the most famous Jaguar of all. Fender Japan reissued it in the 1980s and US production came back in 1999. Pre-CBS guitars and original custom colors, often with a matching painted headstock, are the collector pieces, while CBS-era Jaguars with binding and blocks are easier to find. Check that the mute is still there, ask whether the bridge is original, and make sure every switch works.

How to date one
Serials follow other Fenders, with an L prefix for 1963–1965 and F plates from late 1965, and the neck heel carries an ink stamp with a width letter. Early guitars have clay dots, pearl dots came in 1965 along with a bound neck, and blocks arrived in 1966.
What to check before you buy
The threaded saddles let strings slip out of place when strummed hard, so Mustang-style saddles and aftermarket bridges are common, and the bridge posts can sink into their holes. Mutes were often removed and lost, and pickups and switching get modified.
01String mute: Look for the mute lever and its foam pad in the photos. Many were removed and lost, so an intact mute is a plus on an original guitar.
02Bridge: Ask whether the bridge and saddles are original. Mustang-style saddles and aftermarket bridges are common swaps.
03Switches: Ask for a short clip working the three lower switches and the rhythm switch. Each pickup switch, the strangle switch and both rollers should work without crackle.
04Shielding: Ask for a photo of the control cavity. US Jaguars have brass shielding plates, while Japanese ones from the late 1990s on use shielding paint.
05Inlays: Check the inlays and binding against the year claimed. Unbound necks with dots fit 1962–1964, binding fits 1965 on, and blocks fit 1966 on.
06Neck date: Ask for a photo of the neck heel stamp. It should fit the serial and sit within a few months of the pot dates.

Which one to buy

We'd buy the 1965 L-series sunburst with its original case from a US dealer at $5,999 delivered, just under the $6,725–14,525 delivered band where most of the about 63 listed sit. Jaguars titled 100% original ask $6,568 for a 1966 sunburst and $16,500 for a 1966 Fiesta Red with a matching headstock, pre-CBS guitars and custom colors run up to $29,148, and 1970s Jaguars start at $4,020. No title here admits a refinish, so ask for photos under the guard and check the mute is still there, the bridge and saddles are original, every switch works in a clip, and the inlays fit the year (dots on an unbound neck to 1964, binding from 1965, blocks from 1966). Skip the 1962 at $2,678 from Japan, far too cheap for an original, and compare photos on the two 1966s listed by different sellers under the same title.

The lowest delivered Jaguar here once you set aside the too-cheap 1962, a 1973–75 sunburst from Japan, late in the original run. The title doesn't name one year, so ask for the neck plate serial and heel stamp, and check the mute and bridge are there.
A 1965 titled L-series with its original case from a 100% US dealer, with free shipping, about $700 under the bottom of the band. L serials ran 1963–1965, so ask for the neck plate and heel stamp and check they agree.
1965 Fender Jaguar Sunburst w Original Case L-Series Vintage Guitar Offset
Titled 100% original and plays nice, a 1966 sunburst for about $570 more than the 1965 L-series. Ask for a clip of every switch and both rollers, and look at the inlays, since blocks arrived in 1966.
A 1966 Fiesta Red with a matching headstock titled 100% original, from a 100% US dealer, about $12,600 under the black pre-CBS one at the top. Painted headstocks and custom colors are where refinishes hide, so ask for photos under the guard and of the headstock face.
