Gretsch demonstrator Jimmie Webster built the White Falcon as a showpiece for the July 1954 NAMM convention, raiding the drum and banjo lines for gold sparkle binding and engraved pearl inlays. Dealers wanted it, so Gretsch put the 6136 on sale in 1955 as its most expensive electric. It's a 17-inch hollow body with a 25.5-inch scale, gold-plated hardware, a falcon engraved on the gold pickguard, a Cadillac G tailpiece and a winged vertical logo on the headstock. Gretsch kept changing it. Humptop inlays came in 1957, and 1958 brought Filter'Tron humbuckers, thumbnail inlays, the Space Control roller bridge and a stereo version, the 6137. The logo turned horizontal, the body got thinner, and in 1962 the Falcon went double cutaway with a Bigsby as standard. Neil Young plays one, and Gretsch has built Stephen Stills and Billy Duffy signature Falcons. The 1950s single cutaways are the collector pieces. If you want the look to play, Gretsch has reissued nearly every phase, most of them made in Japan, so pick the year you like.

How to date one
Check the serial against Gretsch's yearly table, and on 1959–1965 guitars look for it on the headstock nameplate. Block inlays and DynaSonics mean 1955–1957, Filter'Trons and the roller bridge mean 1958 or later, and a double cutaway means 1962 on.
What to check before you buy
The floating tuning fork bridge Gretsch used from about 1966 was unpopular and often removed. Old Gretsch binding and glue deteriorate with age, which leads to binding replacement and neck resets.
01Headstock logo: Look at the headstock logo in the photos. A vertical winged logo belongs on an early Falcon, and the horizontal logo came in around 1958–1959.
02Bridge: Check the bridge in the photos. A Melita bridge points to 1955–1957, and a Space Control roller bridge points to 1958 on.
03Pickups: Look at the pickup covers in the photos. DynaSonics belong on guitars before 1958, and Filter'Trons should carry the patent-applied-for stamp up to 1960.
04Binding: Zoom in on the gold sparkle binding around the body, neck and headstock. It should be intact and matching all the way round.
05Stereo wiring: If the listing says stereo, ask for photos of the switches and output jack. A 6137 has extra switching that sends the pickups to two amps.
06Neck set: Ask for the action at the 12th fret and a side photo of the neck joint. Low action with bridge height to spare means no reset is due.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
White Falcons are scarce, with about 4 listed, so the $13,325–26,000 delivered band isn't a market read. The one we'd look at is the 1966 from a US seller at $14,035 delivered, since the 1965 6137 stereo guitar that two Japanese dealers list at $11,280 and $14,833 is the same guitar, and the 1960 single cut at $59,500 has nothing here to compare against. Ask for the serial (on the headstock nameplate on 1959–1965 guitars), check that the bridge, pickups and gold sparkle binding fit the year, and on a stereo 6137 ask for photos of the extra switches and output jack. At this price, insist on a hard case plus box, full insurance and a return window, and pay only through eBay checkout.

Every other Falcon here is either listed twice or asks $59,500, so this 1966 from a US seller is the one to look at. Gretsch fitted an unpopular tuning fork bridge from about 1966 that owners often removed, so ask which bridge it has and for photos of the binding and neck joint.
