Gretsch launched the 6128 Duo Jet in 1953, a year after Gibson's Les Paul, with a similar single cutaway shape but a routed, chambered mahogany body instead of a solid slab. Early tops were covered in black Nitron plastic from Gretsch's drum line, and the silver sparkle Silver Jet and the red Jet Fire Bird soon joined it. Cliff Gallup played a Duo Jet with Gene Vincent and inspired a young Jeff Beck, Bo Diddley posed with a Jet Fire Bird, and George Harrison bought a 1957 Duo Jet secondhand in 1961 and used it in Hamburg and on the Beatles' first US album, later putting it on the cover of Cloud Nine. The specs track the hollow bodies, with DynaSonics until Filter'Trons arrived in 1958. In 1961 the Jet went double cutaway, often with a Burns vibrato, and that's the shape Malcolm Young played in AC/DC. Collectors prefer the single cutaways. Guitarist's Huw Price says golden-era Jets often need neck resets and a good reset needn't hurt the value, so don't let one put you off an otherwise original guitar.

How to date one
On Jets the serial label is in the back control cavity, and sometimes the number is scratched inside the control plate. Script headstock logos mark the first 150 or so guitars from 1953–1954, block inlays mean before 1957, and Filter'Trons mean 1958 on.
What to check before you buy
Golden-era Jets often need neck resets, and 1950s Gretsch wiring insulation cracks, so replaced wiring is common. Old binding and glue deteriorate too.
01Control cavity: Ask for a photo inside the back control cavity. You want the serial label or number, with wiring that looks original.
02Pickups: Check the pickups in the photos. DynaSonics fit 1953–1957 guitars and Filter'Trons fit 1958 on.
03Headstock logo: Look at the headstock logo in the photos. A script logo should only be on a very early 1953–1954 Jet.
04Tailpiece: Look at the tailpiece in the photos. A G tailpiece, Bigsby or Burns vibrato should suit the year, with no extra screw holes around it.
05Neck set: Ask for the action at the 12th fret and a side photo of the neck joint. Low action with bridge height to spare means no reset is due yet.
06Binding: Zoom in on the body and neck binding. It should be intact, with no crumbling or newer plastic patched in.

Duo Jets are thin here, with about 6 listed, so the $6,550–10,000 delivered band isn't a market read. The 1956 black one from a US seller at $6,557 delivered is the one we'd chase, since the other 1950s black Jets ask $8,436–10,441, and the cheapest, a 1961 single cut at $5,708, is titled as a refinish, which is why it's cheaper. Ask for a photo inside the back control cavity for the serial label and wiring, check that the pickups and inlays fit the year, and ask for the action at the 12th fret, since golden-era Jets often need neck resets. Skip the 1962 from a zero-feedback seller in Denmark with no shipping stated.

The lowest delivered Jet here, a 1961 single cut titled PRO-RE FINISH and PLAYER, so it's refinished and priced as a player. A refinish cuts collector value hard, so ask what else has been changed.

A 1956 black Duo Jet from the DynaSonic and block-inlay years, about $3,400 under the other 1956 here. Ask for the control-cavity serial label, the neck set and the binding before you make an offer.
The only Jet here titled refretted, a 1958 from the first Filter'Tron year with its original case. Ask when the refret was done and for the action at the 12th fret.
