Rickenbacker 360
Roger Rossmeisl designed the Capri line for owner F.C. Hall in 1958, and the 360 was its deluxe two-pickup model, with a bound neck, triangle inlays and a body hollowed out of a solid block of maple. The first 360s had sharp cutaways and binding on both the top and the back. In 1964 Rickenbacker rounded off the top edge, which left no room for top binding, so a new style 360 has a bound back and a bound soundhole instead. Collectors call the two versions old style and new style. The low-output toaster pickups gave way to Hi-Gains with about twice the output around 1969–70, and that's the line most buyers care about. Peter Buck says the black 360 he bought after his first one was stolen in 1981 is on every R.E.M. record but the first single. John Hall said in 2000 that only the 330 outsold it. For the 1960s chime, find a new style 360 with original toasters and a serial that fits. For a player, a later Hi-Gain 360 or a 360V64 reissue gives you the same body with fewer questions to answer.

How to date one
Read the jackplate serial. From 1961 to 1986 it starts with two letters, the year first (A is 1961, D is 1964, I is 1969) and the month second (A is January), and Rickenbacker's own online decoder covers the other eras. On a non-reissue, a sharp bound top edge means old style, a rounded top means 1964 or later, and toasters point to the 1960s.
What to check before you buy
Rickenbacker's twin truss rods can rattle or be misadjusted, so ask how the neck sits and who set it up. Toasters and Hi-Gains share one footprint and swap easily, so make sure the pickups fit the year. Don't trust pencil writing inside the body, since Rickenbacker says those cavity markings often didn't match the guitar.
- 01Serial: Ask for a sharp photo of the jackplate. The serial should decode to a date that fits the body style and pickups.
- 02Body edge: Look at the top edge in the photos. Sharp and bound means old style, rounded with a bound back means 1964 or later.
- 03Pickups: Ask for close photos of both pickups. Chrome two-slot toaster covers belong on a 1960s 360, while Hi-Gains belong on later ones.
- 04Original finish: Ask for a photo under the pickguard. Rickenbacker calls that the simplest place to see the factory finish, and it should match the body.
- 05Neck: Ask the seller to sight down the neck and report any twist or rattle. A straight neck that holds its setup is what you want.
- 06Reissue check: Compare the serial format with the claimed year. A seven-digit serial starting with two year digits means 1999 or later.
