Gretsch · 6120 · 1954–1971 (as model 6120)
Gretsch signed Chet Atkins in 1954 and put his name on an orange 16-inch hollow body with a Bigsby, a G branded into the top and cows and cactus engraved on the fingerboard blocks. Atkins soon moved to his Country Gentleman, but Eddie Cochran and Duane Eddy made the 6120 a rock and roll guitar, and Brian Setzer brought old ones back into fashion in the early 1980s. Gretsch changed it almost every year. The western trim was gone by 1957, Filter'Tron humbuckers and an ebony board with thumbnail inlays replaced the DeArmond DynaSonics in 1958, the zero fret came in 1959, and the body got thinner in 1960 and 1961 before going double cutaway late in 1961. It was renamed the Nashville in the mid-1960s and became model 7660 in the early 1970s. Collectors chase the single cutaways. A DynaSonic guitar from 1955 sounds very different from a 1959 Filter'Tron one, so decide which sound you're after first. If you mainly want to play one, Gretsch's Japan-made reissues copy specific years closely and are far easier to live with.
Check the serial on the label inside the body against Gretsch's yearly table, then confirm it by features, since specs overlap between years. Engraved cow-and-cactus blocks and the G brand mean 1954–1956, humptop blocks mean 1957 to early 1958, and Filter'Trons stamped PAT. APPLIED FOR mean 1958–1960.
Old Gretsch binding and glue deteriorate, so binding replacement and neck resets are common repairs on 1950s and 1960s 6120s. Pickups get swapped (Eddie Cochran put a P-90 in his) and many owners removed the string mutes from early-1960s guitars, and changes like these cut the value of an original.
Buying guide
For a 6120 to play, buy a 1960s double cutaway Nashville from a US seller, where 1964–67 guitars start at $3,800 delivered, and the 1967 with its original hard case at $3,949 is our pick. About 14 are listed and most ask $4,050–9,250 delivered, but the page splits by shape, with 1957–59 single cuts at $10,120–13,205 and 1962–71 double cuts at $2,436–6,580, the top one a 1964 with its hang tag. Ask for the label serial through the f-hole, check that the inlays and pickups fit the claimed year and that the label shows no G-prefixed model number (a Japan-made reissue), and get close-ups of the binding and the neck joint, since binding rot and neck resets are the usual repairs. Skip the 1962 Thinline that two US sellers list under the same title at $2,745 and $4,579 until you've compared photos.
$2,436.26est. delivered
Titled 1971, so it's a late Nashville built after the 1970 move to Arkansas, and at $2,436 delivered it's the lowest-priced 6120 here. It ships from Canada, so ask for the label serial and photos of the pickups and binding.
Vintage 1971 Gretsch Chet Atkins Nashville 6120
$3,949.00est. delivered
The original hard case is in the title, and it costs only $149 more than the 1966 whose case isn't titled original. Ask for the label serial, binding close-ups and a side photo of the neck joint.
Vintage 1967 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 Western Orange w/ Original Hardshell Case
$4,391.60est. delivered
The title says no binding rot, and crumbling binding is the common fault on 1960s Gretsches, so this 1964 double cut is a safer first buy. Confirm it with close-ups and ask for the action at the 12th fret.
1964 Gretsch Chet Atkins Nashville 6120 DC - excellent + no binding rot!!!
$10,120.00est. delivered
A 1957 single cut with its original hard case at $10,120 delivered, the lowest ask of the four 1950s 6120s here. 1957 is the humptop-inlay year with DynaSonic pickups, so check both in the photos along with the label serial, and confirm the returns policy before you pay.
