Gibson Les Paul Custom
Les Paul asked for a guitar that looked like a tuxedo, and in 1954 Gibson gave him the Custom. It was black, with gold hardware, multi-ply binding, an ebony board with pearl blocks and the split-diamond headstock inlay from the Super 400. Under the paint it was all mahogany, with a P-90 at the bridge and Seth Lover's Alnico V staple pickup at the neck, and its low, flat frets earned it the Fretless Wonder nickname. PAF humbuckers arrived in 1957, usually three of them. In 1961 the name moved to an SG-shaped guitar, which is a different instrument. The single-cut came back in 1968 with a maple top, two humbuckers and a shallower headstock angle, and it has stayed in the catalog since. Clapton took a 1958 three-pickup on Cream's first American tour, Mick Ronson stripped the finish off his 1968, and Randy Rhoads played a 1974. If you want the late-1960s guitar new, a Custom Shop 1968 reissue does it. If you want an original, early 1969 is the last stretch before the pancake body and volute.

How to date one
1950s Customs carry an ink-stamped serial, and on the documented examples we found the first digit matches the year. From 1968 the serial is impressed in the headstock and numbers were reused, so lean on the features. Early 1969 guitars have a one-piece mahogany back, a long tenon and no dot over the i, and later ones add the pancake body, volute and a Made in USA stamp. From 1977 the eight-digit serial gives the year and the day of production.
What to check before you buy
Headstock breaks are common on all Les Pauls, and gold plating wears through with play, which is normal. Many Customs have had refrets, pickup swaps and tuner changes, and the Norlin-era pancake bodies, three-piece maple necks and volutes rank lower with collectors.
01Pickups: Count the pickups in the photos and ask about the routs. A 1950s Custom has a P-90 and staple pickup until 1957, then humbuckers, and a 1968 or later has two.
02Body edge: Look at the body edge in a side photo. Stacked layers mean a pancake body from about 1969 to 1977.
03Neck back: Ask for a photo of the back of the neck and headstock. A volute or a three-piece maple neck points to the mid-1970s or early 1980s.
04Frets: Look at the frets in close photos or ask whether it's been refretted. Original 1950s frets are low and flat, so tall frets mean a refret.
05Serial: Read the serial on the back of the headstock. An eight-digit number with Made in USA below it dates from 1977 on and gives the year and day.
06Gold parts: Check the gold hardware in the photos. Worn plating is normal, while bright new gold on an old guitar likely means replaced parts.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 11, 2026
For a player, buy a 1977 Custom from a Japanese dealer at $8,998–10,658 delivered or a 1970–74 Norlin-era one at $9,543–16,209, and if you want the late-1960s guitar, acewho4's 1969 with its original hard case asks $18,149 from the US against $28,769 for a Japanese dealer's 1969 with OHSC. About 31 are listed and the $10,650–19,675 band is mostly those 1970s guitars, while 1957–60 Black Beauties ask $49,700–96,500, from a 1958 titled 95% original parts with three PAFs at $49,700 to oliviasvintage's 1957s with an original Bigsby or original PAFs and Fretless Wonder hang tags at $81,900–96,500. Check the features before the year in the title, since 1950s Customs carry an ink-stamped serial whose first digit matches the year on documented examples, early 1969 guitars have a one-piece mahogany back and no dot over the i, layers at the body edge mean a pancake body from late 1969 to 1977, and from 1977 the eight-digit serial gives the year and day. Fake Les Pauls with copied serials are common, so ask for the serial, body edge, headstock back and pickup solder, skip the 94.1% seller's 1970 with 1969 appointments, and pay only through eBay checkout.
