The 330 is the Rickenbacker most people buy. John Hall said in 2000 that it was the company's best seller, and that the 330, 360 and 4003 together made up about 70 percent of sales. It arrived in 1958 as the standard full-size model in Roger Rossmeisl's Capri line, with sharp unbound edges, dot inlays, a slash soundhole and a single mono jack. Hall reckoned it sounds a touch more acoustic than a 360 because more wood is routed out of the body. By 1961 the body had slimmed from 2 inches to 1.5, and that year F.C. Hall added the small fifth knob that blends the neck pickup. Toasters gave way to Hi-Gains around 1969–70, and from 1970 the neck grew to 24 frets. Johnny Marr bought a Jetglo 330 with his first publishing money and says it steered him toward songs like Still Ill. A 1960s 330 with toasters and 21 frets is the collector's pick. To play, look for a newer 330 with the slim headstock, which came back in 2007.
The jackplate serial dates it. From 1961 to 1986 the first letter is the year (A for 1961) and the second the month, and Rickenbacker's online decoder covers later formats. Count the frets too, since standard 330s had 21 until 1970 and 24 from then until 2022.
The twin truss rods can rattle or be misadjusted, so ask how the neck sits. Pickups swap easily because toasters and Hi-Gains share a footprint, so match them to the date. Rickenbacker says it dropped the bridge-pickup capacitor around 1984, and lots of owners have added or removed it since, so ask whether the wiring is stock.

The 2001 Turquoise 330 is listed by four Japanese dealers at $3,054–4,028, so treat it as one guitar and compare photos.
