The Mark V was Mosrite's student model, the cheaper Ventures guitar for players who couldn't stretch to the real thing. It grew out of the Mark II. After the slab-bodied Ventures II of 1965, Moseley gave the Mark II a smaller body with a gentler German carve, and the Mark V that followed late in 1965 is essentially the same guitar with a new name. It skips the binding and uses flat-topped pickups with no visible pole pieces, a bridge without rollers and Klusons with plastic buttons, but the neck is the same thin Mosrite neck and the vibrato is the regular Moseley unit. The headstock said Ventures Mark V until the deal ended in 1967, then just Mosrite of California, and production ran until Mosrite closed in 1969. Tym Guitars, a Mosrite specialist, calls it one of the more common production Mosrites. Kurt Cobain played a Gospel-branded one in Nirvana for a while. If you want the Mosrite neck and sound for less than a Mark I, this is the one, though it feels noticeably smaller in your hands.

How to date one
Mark II and Mark V serials have a B prefix stamped at the fretboard end, and Tym Guitars puts the first Mark Vs at about B700. Ventures Mark V on the headstock means 1967 or earlier, and many have a date stamp in the neck pocket.
What to check before you buy
Like all 1960s Mosrites, the lacquer checks and the tiny frets wear, so many have been refretted. Plastic-button tuners are often swapped, and some guitars were refinished at the factory, so ask what's original.
01Headstock: Read the headstock in the photos. It should say Mosrite of California, with Ventures Mark V on guitars made before the 1967 split.
02Serial: Ask for a close photo of the fretboard end. A B-prefix serial stamped there is what a Mark II or Mark V should have.
03Pickups: Look at the pickup covers in the photos. Mark V pickups have flat covers with no pole pieces showing.
04Vibrato: Check the vibrato in the photos. It should be a Moseley unit, with a patent number on guitars from late 1966 on.
05Frets: Ask whether the guitar has been refretted. Original Mosrite frets are very small and low, and a good refret is fine for a player.
06Tuners: Look at the tuner buttons in the photos. White plastic oval buttons are correct on a Mark V.

§ Oct 11, 2026
With 3 listings, two of them the same guitar, the $5,650–8,625 band isn't a market read. The one to look at is wolfnsx's 1966 titled The Ventures Mark V with its original case at $2,945 delivered from the US, while the sunburst 1966 #5064 is listed by spp-international at $8,360 and japan_holic at $8,842 from Japan. Japanese Mosrite reproductions exist, so confirm a US Bakersfield guitar from the photos, looking for a B-prefix serial stamped at the fretboard end (the first Mark Vs are about B700), Ventures Mark V on the headstock only through 1967, flat pickup covers with no pole pieces and white plastic oval tuner buttons. Ask whether it's been refretted, since the tiny original frets wear, and whether the finish or any parts were redone.
