Mosrite · Joe Maphis double neck · 1966–1969 at Bakersfield, offered again in the early 1970s; custom double-necks from the 1950s
Mosrite Maphis Double-Neck
Joe Maphis, the fast-picking country player they called the King of the Strings, was playing a Moseley double-neck on Town Hall Party long before Mosrite was a real factory. Semie built him a custom double-neck in the 1950s, and like most early Mosrite double-necks it paired a standard neck with a short octave neck. Maphis's guitar now sits in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Those early double-necks were custom one-offs, as were many more through the early 1960s. The production model came in 1966. Mosrite first listed it as the Ventures Mark XVIII, a Ventures-shaped solid body with a 12-string neck over a 6-string and four pickups, and sold it as the Joe Maphis double neck. Leroy Bonner of the Ohio Players played one on Fire and Love Rollercoaster, and Rory Gallagher owned a 1968. A Mosrite double-neck in a listing is most likely a 1966-on 12/6, a 1960s custom order or a Japanese copy. With two necks, four pickups and a vibrato there's a lot to check, so ask for clear photos of both fretboard ends and every piece of hardware.

How to date one
Tym Guitars lists the production double-neck with a 2J serial prefix, stamped at the fretboard end. Pot date codes help too, since an original guitar can't be older than its pots.
What to check before you buy
Custom and factory double-necks vary a lot, and Moseley often modified or updated guitars over the years, so originality is hard to pin down. Parts guitars built from leftover Mosrite stock and close Japanese copies both exist.
01Neck layout: Confirm the necks in the photos. The production model has a 12-string neck above a 6-string, and other layouts are custom orders or copies.
02Serial: Ask for a close photo of the fretboard ends. A US production guitar should have a stamped serial there.
03Headstocks: Read both headstocks in the photos. US guitars say Mosrite of California, and plain Mosrite usually means Japan.
04Hardware: Look at the bridges, vibrato, knobs and strap buttons in the photos. They should be Mosrite-made parts, which almost no other maker used.
05Pots: Ask the seller for photos of the pot date codes. They should be no later than the guitar's claimed year.
06Switching: Ask for a short clip selecting each neck and pickup. Every position should work cleanly with no crackle.

There's one Mosrite double-neck for sale, so the $15,175–15,200 band is just this guitar and isn't a market read. It's titled a 1959 pre-Ventures double neck with a set neck, side jack and Vibramute, at $15,184 delivered from a US seller, and pre-1966 Mosrite double-necks were custom one-offs, so it isn't the 1966-on production model with a 12-string neck over a 6-string. Ask for both necks and headstocks, the fretboard ends and the pot date codes, which should be no later than 1959, and ask when the Vibramute was fitted, since a cast Vibramute points to 1963–65 on Ventures models and Moseley often updated guitars. Japanese copies of Mosrite double-necks exist, so confirm it's a US Mosrite from the headstocks and the Mosrite-made hardware before you pay.
